I came to the Upper Valley to escape the congestion of Chicago, Boston and similar large cities. I was very fortunate to be able to earn a decent living with a great company in such a wonderful place to raise a family. Since 2000 I have been a full-time photographer and digital photography teacher of small groups of motivated adults in Etna, N.H. I spend as much time as possible enjoying and photographing the region’s nature, scenes and people.

Lived in Upper Valley: 24 years
Each day, on my way in to work, I pass by the hospital in Randolph where I was born. As a member of the photography staff of The Herald of Randolph, a weekly hometown newspaper, I am constantly on the lookout for the varied quirkiness that makes life in rural Vermont special. A childhood spent in the communities of Tunbridge and Royalton instilled in me a great appreciation of our local character - no matter where in the world I am, I know that I can look forward to coming home to the Green Mountains and the White River. I count myself lucky to have been born into such a curiously amazing place as the Upper Valley.

Lived in the Upper Valley: 16 years

In the time I've lived in the Upper Valley, both sides of the river, I've enjoyed the pace of life and all that it offers. Watching my son grow up with opportunities I never had, reminds me how rich and abundant life in this area is. For me, personally, nothing created more of a sense of community than joining an all-volunteer fire department. Some riches and rewards are intangible and invaluable.

Lived in the Upper Valley: Have now lived half my life in the Upper Valley
I grew up in the country in many parts of this country. And I’ve carried a camera with me since I was 8 years old. In Williamsburg, I made a photographic study of poverty in the area that was a major factor in the passing of an open-housing bill. In Washington, D.C., I was the primary photographer for theater and dance. When I moved to New England, the warm and welcoming natives and friends became my subjects and resulted in my first book, Vermonters. The people of Vermont and New Hampshire are what makes these states special and unique — and are the reason I’ve stayed. And the “Verhampshirites” who populate our Upper Valley are a fine family of which to be a part!

Lived in the Upper Valley: 7 years
I have lived in many beautiful parts of this great country. For the past seven years, the Upper Valley has been home. My wife, Bernadette, and I routinely comment about living in a postcard setting, a bit of fantasy in our lives, and we have no plans to move again. I have been photographing whatever I see
since I can remember; I hope to be doing it until I can’t remember. Photography is everything to me, my livelihood, my passion and my
escape. The Upper Valley provides endless opportunities for me with an ever changing backdrop. Whether I am shooting a portrait, a
wedding or any other assignment as Mountain Graphics Photography (www.mountaingraphics.com), or out capturing the boundless beauty that surrounds us as fine art, I am at home here in the Upper Valley.

Born: Manchester, Conn.
Residences: Burlington County, N.J.; Louisville, K.Y.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Rocky Hill, Conn.; Natick, Mass.; and the Upper Valley in the 70s, 80s and returned in 2003 to Wilder, Vt.
I was given an Ansco camera (still have it) by my uncle when I was 8 years old and from that time on I considered myself the family photographer! I graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., with a major in photographic illustration. Married to David O'Neill, fellow student at RIT. I was a staff news photographer in South Jersey, and freelanced for The New York Times, Associated Press and the Philadelphia Inquirer. After much consideration, we returned to the Upper Valley for the third time to open our new business - Northlight Digital in the Tip Top Building in White River Junction, Vt. - with daughter Rose and her husband Denis. I have a special interest in documentary photography, the history of the medium and preserving images, especially as it relates to the family. Last year we produced, printed and exhibited the Annie O show, "24 Years of a Girl's Life with Autism," a photo document of our younger daughter, Annie.

Lived in the Upper Valley: I am an Upper Valley native
Being a native of the Upper Valley area, I sometimes have to remind myself what a great place this is to work and live. It is usually a new friend that tells me how wonderful it is here compared to where they were living before. This often makes me open my eyes and see for the first time what they are seeing, that in fact it is a special place, and I should not take it for granted.

Born: The Lakes Region, N.H.
Residences: Lebanon, N.H.; Newfoundland and Labrador
Lived in the Upper Valley: 10 years
I find New Hampshire and Vermont to be one of the most beautiful places in the east. It has been a wonderful place to raise children. However my heart also belongs in Newfoundland and Labrador, where I have been traveling back and forth to for the past seven years. I have two exceptional children that are now grown and moving successfully ahead with their lives, which affords me the opportunity to be in both places. I have been a photographer for the past 27 years; photography has been my true passion since the first time I picked up a camera. I had put my camera away for the past five years to pursue massage therapy, but am now returning to my one true passion.
